Safety in Cairns

Cairns is a very safe City, particularly when compared to larger cities. But as a sign of the times all travellers should take the same precautions when travelling throughout North Queensland as they would when travelling anywhere in the world.

An example of this is that at night it is advisable for tourists to stay in the well lit, populated areas of the City. Avoid parks after dark and if you find yourself in an area that is poorly lit with no one else around, you should head back to the more frequented part of town.

Likewise when out and about be aware of your personal belongings by keeping them close to you. Don't leave valuables unattended or by your chair in restaurants. If your room has safe use it or take advantage of the hotels central security.

Hitchhiking was a popular form a transport in Australia for many years. It is actually illegal and once again considered to be an unsafe practise anywhere in the world. Likewise throughout North Queensland you are taking a risk if you decide to hitchhike.

If you are driving try not to leave valuables exposed in your car if leaving it unattended for long periods of time, especially in isolated areas such as in National Parks.

There is a strong police presence in North Queensland. If you are unsure about where to go or where not to go you can always ask one of the local police for their opinion. The emergency telephone number for police, fire and ambulance in Australia is 000. If calling from a public telephone no coins are needed.

Once again Cairns is a very safe city but by taking a few simple precautions and using your head you may avoid petty crimes that can ruin a good holiday.
