Port Douglas, Daintree and Cape Tribulation

There are a number of destinations you can consider on this trip. The Cook Highway is the most popular access route to Port Douglas. It is a very windy Road and one which should also be treated with respect. Many tourists have come to grief on this stretch of road during wet conditions. The road runs very close to the drop off to the beach and sea. It is, without a doubt, the most scenic route in the area and should not be missed. Be warned, however, that most of the windy bits have been reduced to 80 Kmph. This may seem a bit slow to any of you knee sliders but you will be compensated by the scenery.

There are many places you can stop for that photo along the way but the most popular spot is the Rex lookout which is just a couple of kilometres after the Hartleys Creek Crocodile Farm. You should time your trip to arrive back at the Croc Farm at show time. You will experience something you will never forget and will leave you with deep suspicion about getting into the bath for fear of crocodiles.

Port Douglas is an historic town and one of Queensland oldest towns which provided access to the Atherton Tableland before Cairns was developed. It is well worth a visit and you should plan about 2 hours there. That will give you the basic idea but you may want to return or extend your stay. Flagstaff Hill commands the seascape and overlooks Four Mile Beach.

North of Mossman lies the Daintree Village. This is a nice little village on the banks of the Daintree River which abounds in crocodiles. Don't plan on going for a swim. If you are going to have lunch in the area we suggest that you do so in the Daintree Village.

You should go over the Daintree on the vehicular ferry for the experience and to see Cape Tribulation. There are a couple of good lookouts at the top of the range after the ferry. The sealed road finishes at Cow Bay and the road north of there is unsuitable for road bikes.
