In July 2000 a general goods and services tax was introduced into Australia. This is part of a major overhaul of the entire taxation system in the country. Some taxes have been abolished, others increased and some stayed the same.

The end result is that most items now attract a GST of about 10%. When making a purchase you may want to enquire if the price includes GST or not otherwise you may get a surprise at the cash register.
