Cairns
Connect Overview
Undara Lava Tubes are located 275 km inland from Cairns (approximately
4 hours' drive). Over 190 000 years ago a major volcanic eruption
occurred with molten lava flowing down a dry river bed. As the top
layer cooled and crusted, the flow continued below leaving a series
of long, dark hollow tubes. Over the years these tubes have in some
places collapsed creating fertile pockets of rainforest similar
to those of Madagascar and East Africa.
Apart
from being an amazing geological attraction Undara has developed
into a popular tourist attraction, winning many awards over the
last eight years.
Accommodation
is available at Undara and the facilities are good. Guided tours
are conducted through the lava tubes throughout the day.
