Mossman

Cairns Connect Overview
Mossman is a very typical North Queensland country town. It has a distinctly rural feel with the difference being the lush green background of the surrounding vegetation. Whilst there are some fabulous places to visit, Mossman Gorge in particular, most people see Mossman on the way to other areas. If you want to see older style North Queensland architecture try driving down a few of the back roads in Mossman itself.

Population
Approximately 1800

Distance from closest major city
Approximately 90km north of Cairns.

History
Mossman has been a rural centre for the sugar cane industry for many years. As the last main town before the Daintree River it is a service centre for people heading North.

Feel of the town
Mossman is a small North Queensland town. Tourism has grown dramatically around Mossman without making any real changes to the town itself. Mossman is very green and lush, built around the Sugar Mill (established in 1894). There are some excellent examples of older style Queensland houses.

Things to see
Mossman Gorge is one of the most popular and busy places to visit. The Gorge is set in some of the best rainforest in North Queensland, with good walking tracks and great swimming holes. It can get quite crowded but is definitely worth a visit. Mossman Gorge is one of the most accessible places to really experience what a rainforest is like. There is abundant wildlife in the Gorge and if you look carefully you may see a Boyd's Rainforest Dragon sunning itself on a mossy rock.

Things to do
The main attractions are the Mossman Gorge, the Mossman Sugar Mill and the Mossman Golf Course. It is worth taking a drive down some of the back roads in to see the old buildings, especially the hospital. Most people stop at Mossman on the way to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. A few minutes west of Mossman at the entrance of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park is the magical and mysterious Mossman Gorge. Home to the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal Community, the Gorge is the ancient site of many local Aboriginal legends. The traditional Aboriginal land owners conduct tours from their base adjacent to the Gorge Community. The tours take visitors through the rainforest explaining traditional Aboriginal rainforest plant use. All tour guides are Kuku Yalanji and well versed on the stories and legends of the area.
